About

LITTLE WILD THINGS
…started when artist and illustrator James Fish found artistic inspiration in the form of his own little wild things, daughters Chloe and Matea. He realized their spirited and rapidly-evolving emotional lives could only be portrayed in an equally dynamic and multi-faceted way.

So he started applying various mixed-media techniques in an effort to go beyond mere physical representation. The resulting portraits bring forth the vibrant, image-rich world of the child: both real and make believe.

When he’s not making LITTLE WILD THINGS, James is designing and making illustration work for a variety of grown-up clients (CosmoGirl, Dwell, Fortune, Seventeen, Surfer, Spin and Warners Bros. Records, among others). His commercial work can be seen at www.fishlab.com and hand-made goods at www.jamesfish.etsy.com.

James also taught at the Art Center College of Design from 2000 to 2007 and currently teaches Mixed Media and Collage at UCLA Extensions (see a review). His artwork has been exhibited at Blum & Poe Gallery (Los Angeles), Threadwaxing Space Gallery (New York), ACME Gallery (Los Angeles), Culture Cache (San Francisco), 111 Minna Gallery (San Francisco) and DIYGallery. Upcoming exhibitions will be listed on his blog www.fishlab.blogspot.com.

About Original Mixed Media Portraits

A professional illustrator, artist and a father of two, James Fish, wanted to create kids portraits that capture the colorful, vibrant and somewhat anarchic way kids live. Using mixed media + collage allowed him to do just that. And so, out of paper, fabric, scissors and paint were born the Little Wild Things, fun, one-of-a-kind portraits of kids, for kids (and the child within each one of us).
